This inspires highly inventive designs, as uncluttered as they are effective, and comprising a formal vocabulary built up out of assemblage, repurposing and shifting around shapes, materials, references and purposes.

Tomas Kral

Born in 1979 in Slovakia, Tomas Kral has decided to work on a smaller scale than his father architect and urban planner.

Tomas Kral established his product design studio in 2008 in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the context of industrial production and research, Kral’s approach to design is characterized by a clear preoccupation for materials and processes. In glass, cork or ceramic, Tomas Kral work on various projects ranging from products to lighting, furniture and accessories. He often takes inspiration in the tradition and ordinary situations and translate them with a touch of poetry and humor to simply, innovative solutions and clever everyday objects. In order to find a new creative approaches, shapes, details, assemblages and purposes he frequently observes and experiment with craftsmanship and the knowledge of manufacturers.

Atelier Poisson

Giorgio Pesce being passionate about different types of personalities and different ways of seeing and facing things in life, this project expresses with a minimum of words the positive, or negative, or dubious vision. A desire to make the carpet speak, by playing with interjections, a very strong and dynamic handmade typography, on a brightly coloured background. The glass is half full. Or half empty. Or a glass of Swiss white wine.

First collaboration between Chic Cham and Giorgio Pesce, four new carpets designed in the offbeat, playful and surprising spirit emblematic of Atelier Poisson's creations. Following this invitation in the form of a carte blanche, Giorgio Pesce decided from the outset that he wanted to avoid any purely decorative or aesthetic project, to create carpets that were very personal, and that tried to arouse a reaction, an emotion, a little dialogue. The series he produced, in different styles, all obey this principle of very direct dialogue with the viewer, with a humour and a style of illustration that he had not seen elsewhere on this type of medium. With a long experience of colours and a refinement in the choice of colours, each piece is deliciously finished, contrasting with the great strength of the subjects and handmade designs.

Pierre Bonard

For Pierre Bonard, a rug evokes the leaf-covered ground and, from there, the world of the forest, one of his favourite subjects. In the forest, he is particularly interested in certain elements: trunks, branches and logs. A closer look at his work reveals that the anatomy of these woods, lying on a ground that is anything but naturalistic, is a botanical aberration: the Y, the natural shape of a tree branch, becomes an X.

And then X and Y immediately refer to chromosomes. We can see this as a mutation, but also as the hand of man transforming the savage into the civilised, through grafting, trellising or pruning. Nurseryman, woodsman, artist or sorcerer's apprentice? This question is another of Pierre Bonard's favourite themes: the civilised versus the savage (or with the savage).

And what better way to reflect and dream than on the softness of a woollen rug?

Balmer Hählen

Founded by Priscilla Balmer and Yvo Hählen, Balmer Hählen, which consists of a team of four people, has been established since 2013 in the heart of Lausanne. Since its creation, the studio has been involved in collaborations, particularly with designers, stylists and paper shapers. This graphic design exploration allows the studio to develop different types of medium such as print, digital or textile.

For this first collaboration between Chic Cham and Balmer Hählen, two rugs inspired by the stars in which geometric shapes have been developed. Intrigued, even passionate about the planets, they wish to transmit through these two carpets a timeless idea of escape in a minimalist universe.
