Archivist

Fuji matchbox

Archivist was founded in 1998. As the name suggests, it was in the archives of the Natural History Museum that they started.
Although the archive has changed, the enthusiasm for image research has not. Collaborating with artists from around the world, they created a range of British cards, prints and, most importantly, luxury matches.
Ink and paper have always been the central ingredients of their business and now that they own the largest letterpress printing facility in Britain, they have the means to take their quality and innovation to even higher levels.

Matchbox printed on a vintage press. Contains 125 matches, each measuring 100 mm long.

This image was part of Katsushika Hokusai's series Thirty - Using a western perspective to represent both depth & volume. The artist's obsession with the Mount Fuji and natural scenes can be attributed to a popular folktale that suggests that the elixier of life could be found at the mountain's summit.
